The title pretty much says it all - the system tray icon should have an option one can set that shows a number over the icon when unread messages exist.  The font face/size/weight/color used to draw it should be configurable, for those who have vision problems.

I should clarify, this should be in addition to the tooltip popup that's already available.

Just for the record, if you use AWN bar it does exactly what are you asking.
